Tree service in Crooks and Renner
Just north of Sioux Falls, where the beetle was first found, Crooks has confirmed emerald ash borer, and the acreages around Renner have the windbreaks to look after.
Crooks is a Minnehaha County town of about 1,400 people northwest of Sioux Falls. The state listed it among the South Dakota communities with confirmed emerald ash borer in June 2025. The Renner area, northeast of the city, wasn't on that list, but both are inside the Minnehaha County quarantine and close to the north side of Sioux Falls, where the beetle was first found in 2018.
Much of the work out here is on acreages: shelterbelts and windbreak rows of spruce, ash and other trees planted decades ago, and big yard trees around farmhouses. SDSU Extension says Cytospora canker is worst in spruce rows planted about 10 feet apart 20 to 30 years ago, which describes a lot of the windbreaks here. We assess and remove ash, thin and clean up windbreaks, clear storm damage, grind stumps and replant with a mix of species.

Questions from Crooks & Renner homeowners
Is EAB in Crooks?
Yes. The state listed Crooks among South Dakota communities with confirmed emerald ash borer in June 2025.
Do you take out whole windbreak rows?
Yes, or thin them. Removing every other tree in a crowded spruce row often saves the rest.
Can I burn the ash from my windbreak?
On your own property inside the quarantine, yes. It can't leave the quarantine counties without a state permit.
Do you come out to acreages?
Yes. Long driveways and open ground are often easier to work than city lots.
